Interestingly, Mahindra sells a much more rugged and stylish version of this pickup in South Africa and Australia. It is called the Mahindra Scorpio S11 Karoo. Recently, a South African Mahindra dealership showed this pickup in a video, and many Indian fans were impressed.
The Scorpio Karoo gets a tough off-road design with metal front and rear bumpers, bull bars, all-terrain tyres, side steps, sports bars, roof racks, and heavy-duty suspension. Inside, it offers leather seats, touchscreen infotainment, automatic climate control, and even an automatic gearbox. It looks far more premium and adventure-ready than the Indian Scorpio pickup.
Power comes from a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine producing 320 Nm torque. It also gets 4WD, low-range gearbox, and locking differential for serious off-roading.
So why is Mahindra not selling it in India? The main reason is low demand for lifestyle pickup trucks. Most Indian buyers still prefer SUVs like the Toyota Fortuner instead of pickups like the Toyota Hilux.
Another major reason is Indian safety laws. The Karoo uses heavy metal bumpers and bull bars, which are not road legal in India because they can seriously injure pedestrians during accidents. Because of these rules, Mahindra cannot sell this fully modified Scorpio pickup in India anytime soon.
