Lamborghini has officially cancelled its first fully electric car, the Lanzador EV. The model was earlier planned as the brand’s first all-electric vehicle and was expected to launch globally by 2029. However, the company has now decided to stop the EV project due to very low customer interest.
Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann said that demand for electric Lamborghinis is “close to zero.” According to him, most Lamborghini buyers still prefer powerful petrol engines because they love the sound, emotion, and driving feel of internal combustion cars. He also warned that investing heavily in electric cars without strong demand could become an “expensive hobby” for the company.
The Lanzador was first shown as a concept car in 2023. It was designed as a high-riding coupe with bold styling and futuristic looks. While the fully electric version has been cancelled, the model itself is not completely scrapped. Lamborghini now plans to launch the Lanzador as a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) instead of a pure EV.
This means the upcoming Lanzador will likely combine a petrol engine with an electric motor, offering better performance along with some electric driving capability. Lamborghini has confirmed that the first generation of the Lanzador will use a plug-in hybrid setup.
The company has made it clear that it will continue building internal combustion engines for as long as possible. For now, Lamborghini believes its customers want performance, sound, and an emotional driving experience rather than silent electric power.
With this decision, Lamborghini joins a growing list of performance brands that are slowing down their full electric plans and focusing more on hybrid technology.
