What A 1-Million-Mile Toyota Tundra V8 Looked Like On The Inside

Most vehicles start showing major engine wear after a few hundred thousand miles. However, one Toyota Tundra proved just how durable Toyota’s V8 engines can be. The truck belonged to Vic Sheppard, who drove his 2007 Toyota Tundra equipped with the 4.7-litre 2UZ-FE V8 for more than one million miles while hauling heavy equipment across the United States.

After reaching the milestone, Toyota exchanged the truck for a new Tundra and took the old engine apart to inspect its condition. What engineers found was surprising. Despite covering one million miles, the engine looked almost new inside. The cylinder walls still showed their original cross-hatch marks, there was very little carbon buildup, and the crankshaft journals showed almost no visible wear. Engineers said the engine would have scored around 99 out of 100 in Toyota’s quality tests.

The only noticeable issue was a small mark on one bearing. Even the bearings were described as some of the cleanest Toyota engineers had ever seen. While a few components were no longer within factory specifications, engineers noted that this was completely normal after such extreme mileage.

The secret behind the engine’s durability was not any special technology. The 2UZ-FE V8 used a strong cast-iron block, a forged steel crankshaft, oversized bearings, and a large cooling system designed to keep temperatures under control. The engine was also tuned for low-end torque and reliability rather than maximum power.

Regular maintenance played a major role as well. Sheppard followed Toyota’s service schedule carefully and spent most of his time driving on highways rather than in stop-and-go traffic.

Interestingly, Sheppard later drove a 2014 Toyota Tundra with a 5.7-litre V8 to one million miles as well. These achievements continue to show why Toyota’s older naturally aspirated V8 engines are still considered among the most reliable truck engines ever built.
