Hyundai has announced a safety recall for 4,555 units of its 2026 Kona SUV after finding a possible defect in the steering system. The issue affects only gasoline-engine models from the 2026 model year sold in the United States.
According to a report submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the problem is linked to the front steering knuckles. These parts may have been made incorrectly during casting. Because of this defect, cracks can develop when the vehicle is driven under stress, such as during sharp turns or hard cornering.
If the cracks worsen, the steering knuckle could break completely. In that situation, the driver may lose steering control, which increases the risk of a crash. Hyundai said it has not received any reports of accidents or injuries related to this issue so far.
To fix the problem, owners of affected vehicles must take their SUVs to an authorized Hyundai dealership. Technicians will inspect the steering components and replace the faulty parts if needed. All repairs will be done free of cost under the company’s warranty program.
Hyundai plans to inform dealers about the recall by April 6, 2026. Owners should also receive official notification letters around the same date with instructions on what to do next.
Safety recalls are common in the auto industry and are issued when a potential defect could affect vehicle safety. Drivers who own a 2026 Kona are advised to check whether their vehicle is included and schedule an inspection as soon as possible.
